Vintage travel

Since I am currently on the other side of world (Fiji to be precise) I thought it would be very fitting to write a post on the wonderfully artsy and cute vintage suitcases that are quickly becoming a central piece in many homes. Now we probably aren't going to see these beautiful antique cases thrown about on the airport arrival belt but they sure do look good as part of your home decor. You are probably most likely to find them online on Etsy or Ebay although I have seen a few boutique shops selling them. There's also the option of creating your own - something I'm definitely going to do when I get home in 3 weeks! A little searching on Pinterest allowed me to find some awesome vintage suitcase tutorials from a website called Brightness Project (http://brightnessproject.com/vintagesuitcasetuts/?trashed=1&ids=1) They give you so many great ideas...

Naturally, Etsy.com have great ideas, this one has to be my absolute favourite!
Suitcase come vanity case going to be my first project when I get home. Install little compartments for make-up, jewellery and other bits and bobs that you don't want to lose. With the addition of a mirror and a few lights you are all set - mini boudoir that you can carry around! This might be something that is kept in you dressing room or you could even design it to be taken away for weekends, making room for small items such as lingerie and accessories. You could even make one to give as a birthday gift - I'm sure any girl would love to receive something as unique as a suitcase vanity case!

If you have a few suitcases to hand then creating a bigger storage unit would be such a good idea. You won't find this kind of thing in Ikea. Suitcase storage units would look great with a vintage sofa and could be the perfect side table for the living room. You can build them as tall or as short as you like so they can be anything from a bedside table to a full bookshelf.
And finally, I stumbled across an awesome blog/website called Stars for Streetlights. This New York girl offers advice on how to make a suitcase table - yet another amazing idea.
